Job description

For University of Bristol students only.

Team Description

Bristol Formula Student AI (FSAI) is the University of Bristol's autonomous racing team, competing in the Formula Student AI competition. We design, build, and race fully autonomous vehicles, integrating advanced AI, robotics, and real-world engineering systems.

For the 2026 season, we are developing our own Autonomous Platform Cup (APC) vehicle. This project focuses on building a complete low-voltage autonomous race car platform, including power systems, safety circuits, and vehicle electronics.

Joining FSAI means working in a highly motivated, interdisciplinary team and gaining hands-on experience in building real autonomous systems under strict technical and safety regulations.

Role Description - Mechanical Engineer (APC)

You will take a leading role in the design, manufacturing, and integration of the mechanical systems for our APC vehicle. You will work closely with electrical and AI teams to ensure that the vehicle is reliable, compliant with Formula Student regulations, and competitive on track.

Key responsibilities

  • Designing and developing chassis, suspension, steering, and braking systems
  • Producing CAD models and technical drawings for manufacturing
  • Supporting fabrication, assembly, and workshop activities
  • Ensuring compliance with Formula Student technical and safety regulations
  • Improving vehicle reliability, serviceability, and structural integrity
  • Assisting with vehicle testing, setup, and performance optimisation
  • Supporting technical inspection and documentation

Qualifications

We are looking for motivated students who are eager to apply their academic knowledge to real-world autonomous vehicle systems.

Essential

  • Currently studying Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Robotics, or related fields
  • Good foundation in engineering mathematics, mechanics, and structural analysis (e.g. Engineering Mathematics, Engineering Science, Applied Solid Mechanics)
  • Basic understanding of dynamics, materials, and thermal systems (e.g. Dynamics and Control, Materials Engineering, Thermofluids, Heat Transfer)
  • Experience with CAD tools and engineering drawings (e.g. SolidWorks, Fusion 360, CATIA, Onshape, Design Practice modules)
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, tolerances, and specifications
  • Willingness to work hands-on in workshops and during vehicle testing
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Good communication skills and ability to work in a multidisciplinary team

Applicants are not expected to meet every requirement. Strong motivation and willingness to learn are highly valued.

Desirable

  • Experience with student engineering projects, motorsport, robotics, or Formula Student
  • Experience with manufacturing processes (e.g. CNC machining, 3D printing, composites, welding, sheet metal work)
  • Knowledge of suspension geometry, vehicle dynamics, or structural optimisation
  • Familiarity with fasteners, tolerances, and assembly best practices
  • Experience supporting technical documentation and technical inspection
